The application deadline for the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Back to Business grants is 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday.

Ald. Sophia King (4) tweeted “Today marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month! We appreciate the rich culture and contributions brought by our Latinx brothers and sisters. Let’s take this opportunity to celebrate and learn more about Latinx contributions to the United States and world.” 

Ald. Susan Sadlowski Garza (10) in a Twitter thread wrote “Construction of a pedestrian bridge at 43rd Street will shut down a portion of the Metra Electric Line this weekend, Sept. 18-19, requiring some late night and early morning Metra and South Shore trains to be canceled or replaced with free CTA shuttles between the 51st Street and Millennium stations.” 

Ald. Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez (33) tweeted “It’s so sad that the default response to violence is punishment and more violence instead of addressing root causes and investing in healing. Gang forfeiture and fines for parents, tough on crime rhetoric to look like something is being done and the end it’s just more harm.” 

Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa (35) shared a CBS story about his proposal calling for hearings on the reliability of ShotSpotter and tweeted “A recent study, a recent report, and recent court case have raised major red flags about the efficacy of ShotSpotter gunshot surveillance technology. Our Chicago City Council has a responsibility to assess the effectiveness and efficacy of this technology.” 

Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36) tweeted “National Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins each year on Sep. 15, celebrates U.S. Latinos, their culture and their history. The U.S. population grew by 22.7 million from 2010 to 2020, and Hispanics accounted for 51% of this increase, a greater share than any other racial group” 

Ald. Matt Martin (47) tweeted “If you need an ambulance, Chicago may bill you up to $1,200. Many can’t afford to pay and are saddled with debt. We have $2B in federal relief that could help eliminate this debt right now. Let’s ensure no one is worried about ability to pay for life-saving care.” 

Ald. Harry Osterman (48) shared an NBC Chicago story and tweeted “The FBI and CPD are looking for help identifying someone in connection to a hate crime that happened at the Argyle Red Line stop. We will not tolerate hate in our community. If you recognize this person, please reach out to CPD and share what you know.”

The Chicago Advisory Redistricting Commission will host a virtual news conference at 12:30 p.m. Monday to unveil the first draft of their independent ward map proposal. Members of the commission “will discuss the community input they received, how they pursued a transparent and inclusive process to design the map and invite further input regarding future revisions,” according to the announcement.  

The Chicago Public Library is adding Sunday hours to 11 additional branches, making 45 library branches that will be open on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The branches that will extend their hours are Austin-Irving, Bucktown-Wicker Park, Oriole Park, Rogers Park, Uptown, West Town, Canaryville, Walker, Bessie Coleman, Greater Grand Crossing and Hegewisch.  

The group United Northwest Side is hosting a protest outside Ald. Jim Gardiner’s (45) office in Jefferson Park at 6 p.m. “45th Ward Alderperson Jim Gardiner is unfit to serve,” the event description reads. “His record of misogyny, intimidation, and retaliation against constituents who dare to disagree with him shows that he doesn't deserve to represent us.”
