Gov. JB Pritzker issued a disaster proclamation for Madison and St. Clair Counties following a large warehouse fire in Madison Wednesday. The disaster proclamation allows the state to prioritize resources for the impacted area. As of Thursday afternoon, Metro East and St. Louis-area fire departments were still fighting the blaze at Interco, a recycling facility. The fire is expected to burn for two days. Officials in Madison issued a shelter-in place order for residents within one mile of the fire because of potentially toxic smoke from the fire. The order was later rescinded Thursday.

Comptroller Susana Mendoza deposited $180 million into the state’s “rainy day” fund, bringing the total amount deposited into the account to over $1 billion—the highest funding level ever for the fund. State lawmakers passed legislation committing funds from Fiscal Year 2022 and 2023 to the account to bring its total to $1 billion.
