WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT — The City Council Committee on Workforce Development on Monday unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement (O2023-1591) with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County for land management services provided through Greencorps Chicago. The ordinance includes an agreement under which the Forest Preserve District of Cook County pays the city $1.35 million for services to be rendered by the city at sites throughout Chicago under Greencorps Chicago. Trainees in the Greencorps Chicago program are individuals who often face barriers to employment, including people who were formerly incarcerated, according to a Chicago Department of Transportation official. The trainees receive training in green industry jobs, wraparound services, a stable income and assistance in finding long-term employment. Ald. Walter Burnett (27) applauded the Greencorps program, saying “they’ve trained a lot of people on the West Side” and trainees have gained self-esteem, have become entrepreneurs and are “competing with each other to fix up gardens."
