    The City Council Committee on Environmental Protection and Energy approved the reappointment of the city’s chief sustainability officer. The Committee on Committees and Rules acted on a proposal to eliminate the city’s tipped minimum wage, and the Committee on License and Consumer Protection approved a measure creating a restricted cannabis zone and a ban on short-term rentals in the 23rd Ward. The City Council’s transportation committee will meet at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. The workforce development committee will vote on an ordinance authorizing collective bargaining agreements with various trade unions.

    Alderpersons on Tuesday gave an initial OK to a proposed property tax incentive to rehabilitate the landmarked LaSalle Street Cable Car Powerhouse in the 42nd Ward.  

    The approval came during the meeting of the City Council Committee on Economic, Capital and Technology Development. Alderpersons approved one other property tax incentive during Tuesday’s meeting.

    The education committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. 

    In a rare scheduling move, the City Council Committee on Education and Child Development is set to meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in council chambers to discuss issues within Chicago Public Schools. 

    Committee meetings are routinely held on weekday mornings or afternoons, but education committee chair Ald. Jeanette Taylor (20) said she wanted to hold the meeting “when working people could get off work” and to “accommodate students who want to be part of the conversation.”

    The Forest Preserves of Cook County are celebrating $2 million in renovations and improvements at the Crabtree Nature Center, which officials say will lower the building’s carbon footprint while improving the experience for visitors.

    The 50-year-old center, which first opened its doors in the 1970s, received most of the funding for its recent improvements through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Public Museum Capital Grants program, according to a district news release. The news comes during a year in which the district has more money and resources at its disposal than it has in the past several years.
