Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Tuesday announced her appointment of Michelle Mills Clement, who is CEO of the Chicago Association of Realtors, to the Board of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority.  

Teamsters Local 777 will hold a “solidarity rally” outside the Zen Leaf dispensary at 1301 S. Western Ave. in Pilsen at 2 p.m. Wednesday to “show their support for workers at the dispensary who have filed for an election to form a union,” union leaders said in an announcement. The rally comes “after the company fired two workers involved with organizing a union at the dispensary without explanation last Thursday,” union leaders said.

A central Illinois federal judge tossed out a lawsuit by the Illinois Fuel and Retail Association Friday that argued a new state law requiring gas stations to post a sticker on pumps explaining that lawmakers passed legislation to freeze the gas tax. Starting July 1, gas stations will be required to post the notice on pumps.   

Gov. JB Pritzker signed SB3782 Friday, which recognizes high school equivalency certificates and an Illinois high school diploma as equal under state law.

Cook County “edged back into” the “high transmission” category for COVID-19 because of a “slight increase in regional COVID-19 hospitalizations,” according to a Friday announcement from the Chicago Department of Public Health. Chicago is consistently recording lower case rates and hospitalizations than the county as a whole, and fewer than 4 percent of beds across Chicago’s hospitals are occupied with COVID-19-positive patients, officials said. “Other Chicago indicators, including Emergency Department encounters and wastewater monitoring, also continue to remain stable,” the announcement added.

Attorney General Kwame Raoul said Thursday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a New York gun law will not affect Illinois. The nation’s high court ruled New York’s law restricted gun owners from carrying a concealed gun unless they can demonstrate a need for self-defense was unconstitutional. “The Supreme Court’s opinion cites Illinois as being among those states whose laws are not affected by the decision,” Raoul said in a statement. Illinois requires gun owners to have a specific license to carry a concealed gun.

The Illinois Supreme Court Pretrial Implementation Task Force will host their first virtual meeting on Thursday. The task force will explore ways to prepare Illinois’ judicial system for a series of changes that will take effect on Jan. 1, 2023, including the end of cash bail. Thursday’s meeting will introduce the six subcommittees of the task force and their roles going forward.   

Illinois officials have renamed Asian Carp to “Copi” as a way to rebrand the fish and highlight its good taste and health benefits. “Copi” is a play off the word “copious,” according to officials. The fish is commonly found in Lake Michigan, the Mississippi River and the Illinois River where 20 to 50 million pounds of the fish can be harvested each year.

The Illinois State Fair will not hold any live poultry shows because of the ongoing spread of bird flu, the fair announced Tuesday. A virtual poster competition will be held instead to recognize competitors.   

The Department of Revenue will officially move out of the Thompson Center in Chicago on Friday, according to a news release from the department. The department will join other relocated state agencies, including the governor’s office, at 555 W. Monroe in Chicago.
