Ward Reports September 18, 2024
Ald. Andre Vasquez (40) posted "Shout out to Katharyn Hurd, Danielle Crider, and Tom Bellino for the Western Abe Corridor Study that led to the ability to do something like this for the FIRST time in our city’s history! We have upzoned the area to allow for more density (while keeping the Affordable Requirements) and making it less possible for auto body shops to take over the ground floor businesses."
Ald. Bill Conway (34) posted in response to a proposal to allow the police superintendent to bypass the mayor and keep ShotSpotter: "I respect the opinions of Supt. Snelling, officers like Ald. Pete Chico, and @uchicago Crime Lab who know we need every available tool to fight violent crime. And I agree with 33 of my colleagues who voted to keep ShotSpotter. But this maneuver isn’t the way forward. I appreciate the pro ShotSpotter comments - those whose opinions I trust also think it’s a useful tool. But Superintendent Snelling, who by all accounts is doing a great job, didn’t sign up to be thrust in the middle of a conflict between City Council and the Mayor. That’s not fair to him. If the will exists in Council, there are a multitude of other ways to compel the Mayor’s office, especially with budget season upon us."
Ald. Jessie Fuentes (26) posted "🎉 Happy #HispanicHeritageMonth Chicago! This year we're celebrating with extra pride as we saw Barrio Borikén (also known as "Puerto Rico Town") officially recognized as a State-Designated Cultural District! 🇵🇷 Located in the heart of #HumboldtPark, Barrio Borikén honors the rich indigenous Taíno roots of PR, preserving the history & traditions that have shaped our community. This designation was announced in Feb & comes with opportunities for economic dev & cultural preservation. Together, we can uplift our culture & invite our families home."
