For reference, we were told it takes about 10 years to complete a Department of Justice consent decree. We are 5 years in and only 7% completion. Not getting this completed costs taxpayers TONS, as we pay over $100M a year on police misconduct settlements. There is a real cost, both in taxes, and more importantly, in lives, when we don’t take this as seriously as we need to as a city."
