Matt Martin (47) posted "Since August 2022, Chicago has received over 34,000 asylum seekers On Sunday, my office, along with @46thWardChi, @AnsheEmet, @TRPistas, Instituto del Progresso Latino, and dozens of volunteers organized a work permit clinic for asylum seekers – the first on the North Side. For nearly a year my office, along with our generous neighbors, has been organizing mutual aid in response to the buses being sent from Texas and other states. But that isn’t enough – these asylum seekers want to be able to work, and we know employers want to hire them. The federal government can and should make getting a work permit easier for our new neighbors, but until that happens, we at the local level have the responsibility to help our new neighbors support themselves."
