Illinois election results: Democrats flip at least 4 General Assembly seats, maintain statewide offices

Democrats retained control of Illinois’ top statewide offices and gained at least four seats across the General Assembly in Tuesday’s Elections while maintaining leads in a handful of other Republican-held seats that had not been called by midnight.

The four top statewide offices below the governor — attorney general, secretary of state, comptroller and treasurer — all remained with Democrats by similarly large margins.

Incumbent Attorney General Kwame Raoul beat perennial candidate Bob Fioretti to be reelected to a third term. Fioretti, a Democrat-turned-Republican, has run for five different positions in the last decade.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias defeated Republican Diane Harris for a second term as the state’s top election official. Giannoulias is also a frontrunner for February’s Chicago mayoral election. If elected mayor, Gov. JB Pritzker would appoint a replacement for the remainder of the term.

Voters also elected state Rep. Margaret Croke (D-Chicago) as comptroller and reelected Treasurer Mike Frerichs to a third term. The victories, each by at least 20 percentage points, continue Democratic strangleholds on the four offices.

Illinois has not had a Republican secretary of state since 1999, an attorney general since 2003, and a treasurer and comptroller for a decade.

In the State House, Democrats flipped a seat in DuPage County held by retiring Republican Amy Grant. The Associated Press called the District 47 race for Erica Bray-Parker, who leads Republican Robert Vrankovich by 18 percent with more than 95 percent of the vote counted.

The party also picked up the 52nd District, the AP called the race for Democrat Maria Peterson over incumbent Republican Rep. Martin McLaughlin. Peterson had 55.9 percent of the vote with an estimated 97 percent of ballots counted.

Democrats also led in four other house districts — 48, 65, 70 and 104 — at midnight in races that had yet to be called.

In the State Senate, Rep. Nabeela Syed (D-Inverness) upset incumbent Republican Darcy Hills in 26th District. The race was among the most expensive General Assembly campaigns ever, with $6.5 million raised between Syed and Hills.

Democrats also flipped the 33rd District seat held by retiring Republican Sen. Don DeWitte and led in four more districts — 24, 32, 35 and 56 — at midnight.

Below are the full results in General Assembly races that have been called and interactive maps for both the State House and Senate.
