    The leaders of the Cook County Health and Hospitals System conservatively expect to spend half a billion dollars caring for uninsured patients next year as Republican-led federal changes to Medicaid boot thousands from their plans, contributing to “one of the most financially challenging years our health system has faced in recent memory,” Cook County Health CEO Erik Mikaitis said in a mid-year hearing last week.
