In an effort to make the legislation more palatable and get it passed by the City Council this fall, Mayor Brandon Johnson has revised parts of his Protecting Renters Ordinance (PRO) to exempt small landlords from the provisions that require landlords in some instances to help pay for a tenant’s moving costs if the landlord chooses not to renew a lease.

The revisions (SO2026-0026554) also would reduce relocation assistance and create a one-year grace period before a tenant’s right to be compensated kicks in.
