Chicago Announcements October 25, 2023
Bridge lifts will take place Wednesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. to allow boats to make their way from Lake Michigan to storage facilities for the season, CDOT announced Tuesday. The 27 bridges will lift in succession for eight to 12 minutes each beginning at DuSable Lake Shore Drive to the Ashland Avenue Bridge on the South Branch of the Chicago River, according to CDOT. Vehicle traffic will be stopped while each bridge is upright.
Mayor Brandon Johnson on Monday issued a statement on an arbitrator's ruling that if approved would allow serious police disciplinary cases resulting in a suspension of one year or longer, or termination, to go to an independent arbitrator instead of the Chicago Police Board, calling it "a major setback for police accountability and reform." Johnson called on the City Council to reject the proposal when it comes up for a vote. "Ultimately, we will not allow this to undermine our efforts to advance reform, increase transparency and implement our vision for improved public safety and policing to make our city better, stronger, and safer," Johnson said in the statement.
