Mayor Brandon Johnson on Monday issued a statement on an arbitrator's ruling that if approved would allow serious police disciplinary cases resulting in a suspension of one year or longer, or termination, to go to an independent arbitrator instead of the Chicago Police Board, calling it "a major setback for police accountability and reform." Johnson called on the City Council to reject the proposal when it comes up for a vote. "Ultimately, we will not allow this to undermine our efforts to advance reform, increase transparency and implement our vision for improved public safety and policing to make our city better, stronger, and safer," Johnson said in the statement.
