Chicago Announcements May 17, 2023

Mayor Brandon Johnson during a news conference Tuesday said he is looking to fill the newly established position of deputy mayor for immigrant, migrant and refugee rights "as soon as possible," though the city still has to "go through an entire vetting process to make sure that we have the right person, the right fit." Johnson created the new deputy mayor position Monday with one of the four executive orders he signed during his first day in office. The goal of the new deputy mayor position will be to "bring the government and the community together" and to ensure the city is tapping into all the resources it can when it comes to helping migrants, immigrants and refugees in Chicago, Johnson said during the Tuesday news conference.
