Gov. JB Pritzker signed an executive order Monday directing state agencies to evaluate how the Trump administration’s tariffs will impact Illinois.

President Donald Trump’s tariff policies have changed rapidly throughout the first six months of his administration, but no matter the change in policy, a number of tariffs on imports are in place and more appear to be on the way.

The president announced over the weekend that a 30 percent tariff on the European Union and Mexico will go into effect Aug. 1. Tariffs are in effect on Canadian goods, as well as Chinese imports. Automobiles, steel and aluminum also have varying tariffs on them.

Trump’s focus on Mexico and Canada, two of Illinois’ biggest trade partners, has raised concerns for Illinois businesses and consumers. Illinois is the largest exporting state in the Midwest and the fifth largest exporter nationally. Altogether, the governor’s office said exports support about 800,000 jobs statewide.

Pritzker’s executive order directs state agencies to examine how these tariff policies will impact various Illinois sectors.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and Illinois Department of Employment Security will examine what regions in the state will be most impacted by the tariffs, challenges businesses will face and employment trends.

The Illinois Department of Public Health will examine price increases or supply chain disruptions for key medical supplies.

The Illinois Department of Human Services will evaluate any supply chain reductions that impact food assistance programs or Illinois food banks. This comes after cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) raised concerns about Illinois legislators on the strain on already struggling food banks.

The Illinois Department of Transportation will evaluate material costs for road projects and determine if any adjustments to timelines are needed to ensure project costs don’t skyrocket. The department will also see if any adjustments are needed for its long-term road planning. The Illinois Capital Development Board will also evaluate material costs and potential strategies to mitigate increased construction costs.

Finally, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency – Office of Homeland Security will look at emergency supply costs and procurement. The agency will also develop strategies to ensure Illinois’ emergency supplies remain stocked without going over budget.

Pritzker’s order is part of a coordinated action taken by governors from states across the country to evaluate how tariffs will impact individual states. Governors from Colorado, New York, Oregon and Washington issued similar orders as Pritzker.

The executive order states that when appropriate, Illinois should propose coordinated actions with “similarly situated states” that may reduce the impact of the tariffs on the states’ economies.

“This Executive Order ensures we have a clear-eyed view of the impact the Trump Slump will cause from higher prices at the grocery store to uncertainty in our farms and factories,” Pritzker said in a statement. “We’re working with other states to stand up for working people and protect our economies when we can.”
