Cook County Comm. Tara Stamps (D-1) was declared the victor Tuesday night in the special election to serve out the remainder of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s unexpired County Board of Commissioners term. The Associated Press called the race for Stamps just after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
No Republican ran in the race for District 1, which includes portions of Chicago’s West Side and parts of Oak Park and Proviso townships.
Stamps defeated Libertarian candidate James Humay with 89.4 percent of the vote to Humay's 10.6 percent.
Stamps, who like the Chicago mayor has worked for the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU), was appointed in June 2023 to the District 1 seat after Johnson took office.
Under county code, because more than 28 months remained in Johnson’s term after he left the board, a special election was required to allow Stamps to hold on to the seat. Johnson had just begun his second term on the county board when he was elected mayor, and Stamps will serve at least until the term ends in 2026.
Stamps, an organizer, CTU New Teacher Development administrator and daughter of noted Cabrini-Green public housing activist Marion Stamps, won the Democratic primary in March against West Side activist Zerlina Smith-Members with 84.8 percent of the vote.
