As of early Friday afternoon, 1,301 early votes have been cast in the special election for 4th Ward alderman, including 1,149 in-person early votes and 152 cast by mail, according to the Chicago Board of Elections. The special election is four days away, scheduled for Tuesday, February 28.

No one filed to be a write in candidate by the state-imposed deadline. Five candidates are vying for the seat, including incumbent Ald. Sophia King who was appointed to the seat by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in April.

    The other candidates are:

38 precincts in the South Side ward will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents can find their closest polling place here. The 4th Ward has 36,588 registered voters, nearly a 6,000 increase from the last municipal election in 2015.

To win outright, a candidate must receive more than 50% of the vote, otherwise the top two candidates will compete in a run-off. A preliminary run-off election date has been set for April 4th.

The special election was prompted by the resignation of former 4th Ward Ald. Will Burns and will determine which of the five candidates will finish out the remainder of his term.
