The Chicago suburbs have continued to trend toward Democrats in recent elections and now the pressure is falling on Rep. Martin McLaughlin (R-Barrington Hills) to hold on to his seat and win a third term representing the northwest suburbs.
McLaughlin faces a challenging test, however, from Barrington resident Maria Peterson who is hoping to capitalize on a strong performance in a state senate race in 2022 and force out another suburban House Republican.

Although Eileen O’Neill Burke is favored to win the Cook County State’s Attorney race in a county that regularly votes for Democrats, the former judge told The Daily Line she’s not taking anything for granted as polls open countywide.
Early voting began in Chicago Thursday and begins in suburban Cook County next week, and former Ald. Bob Fioretti is hoping his appeals to law enforcement, crime victims and suburbanites spooked by Chicago violence leads to an upset in the race to replace State’s Attorney Kim Foxx.

The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Board of Education didn’t act on CPS CEO Pedro Martinez’s contract or on a proposal to take out a high-interest loan to help shore up its budget at its Thursday evening meeting, but it did vote on a school closure moratorium following allegations from the teachers union that Martinez was looking at closing or consolidating schools.

Illinois voters can begin casting ballots Thursday in an election year where much of voters’ focus is on the presidential contest at the top of ticket. At the Democratic Party of Illinois, the goal is also to ensure Democratic candidates further down the ballot find success amid noise generated by the presidential contest.

The City Council on Wednesday approved a replacement zoning committee chair, an ordinance to incentivize the construction of data centers in the city and the appointment of a new chief procurement officer. The council also gave final approval to an anti-gentrification ordinance for the Northwest Side and a controversial appointment to the civilian police oversight commission.

Alex Gallegos, a Crete-Monee Community Unit School District 201-U Board member, gained local attention two weeks ago for being the only Illinois delegate to the Democratic National Convention (DNC) to vote “present” during the roll call to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris to the top of the party ticket over the administration’s continued support for arming Israel in its military campaign in the Gaza Strip, which has killed thousands of civilians.
