Mayor Lori Lightfoot used her budget address Monday to announce plans to establish an executive office dedicated to overseeing the city’s climate and environmental policies. But the announcement seems to fall short of a promise the mayor made during her first campaign.

Lightfoot: “We are very much solidly on the right path…" to what specifically? Purchasing renewable electricity is picking low hanging fruit. It doesn’t even begin to compensate for the Crawford power plant disaster. That would likely have been prevented by a permanent Department of Environment empowered to oversee a project of that scale with that much potential to negatively impact the health of a significant number of people and a large residential area of Chicago. That’s just one example of why we need a politically independent environmental department. There are other ongoing issues such as the lead pipe replacement program and more frequent and damaging flooding that need to be addressed by a dedicated staff of environmental professionals.
